THE CHALLENGE

For producing furniture and mattresses a French company buys soft foam in blocks from suppliers in The Netherlands. Now since transporting foam blocks is highly inefficient, the company needed a solution.

Together with Huntsman, the company decided that producing the foam on site at the company would be far more efficient than being supplied with the end product. Immediately the need for storing the chemicals MDI and polyol onsite presented itself.

Huntsman and the French company considered transporting the chemicals in drums. This turned out to be only marginally less expensive than the current situation. Filling, emptying and cleaning the drums proved to be highly cost-ineffective. Another possibility they considered was building tank containers on site. However, the environmental regulations and measures for storing these chemicals turned out to be an unproportional investment.

THE SOLUTION

Den Hartogh Logistics offered an effective, cost-efficient solution. For both components, MDI and polyol, a tank container was installed at the French company. Since Den Hartogh Logistics has special containers for hazardous chemicals, all safety and environmental measurements were covered immediately. Den Hartogh Logistics took the solution even one step further by equipping the tank containers with advanced measuring devices for checking the contents. The devices are connected with a satellite and can be accessed from anywhere, via internet.

Den Hartogh Logistics now handles all transports of MDI and polyol from Huntsman to the French company. Not only have their production costs decreased with this solution, today they are far more powerful when it comes to supply management; they can react more flexible to sudden peaks in their production level.
