Den Hartogh Dry Bulk signs up to Operation Clean Sweep®

27 mrt, 2017

About 75% of Den Hartogh Dry Bulk's operations involve the transport of plastic pellets. As part of its environmental agenda, Den Hartogh made a public commitment by signing up to Operation Clean Sweep®. By signing up to Operation Clean Sweep®, companies make a commitment to adhere to best practice and implement systems to prevent plastic pellet loss — and that they will play their part in protecting the aquatic environment.

Operation Clean Sweep® is an international initiative from the plastics industry to reduce plastic pellet loss to the environment. The initiative's aim is to ensure that the plastic pellets, flakes and powders that pass through manufacturing facilities are handled with the care they deserve and do not end up in our rivers or seas. For example, manufacturers are advised to review their water drainage systems while logistic operators should focus on preventing spills when delivering the pellets.

Den Hartogh Dry Bulk carried out a step-by-step review of all different tasks performed by its drivers and terminal personnel and identified the activities that could cause spills or other forms of environment pollution. They have provided training and written instructions to all drivers on the correct way of performing these tasks in order to prevent spills. Environmental training has been provided to all personnel of our European terminals and we are now in the process of delivering additional awareness sessions.
