Den Hartogh Logistics joins the Green Freight Europe Program

14 jan, 2013

Den Hartogh Logistics as a Smart Logistics Provider joins the Green Freight Europe Program. It is an initiative to intensify collaboration between shippers, logistics providers and governments. The initiative aligns with Den Hartogh's policy towards sustainable logistics and supply chain management.

Green Freight Europe is a voluntary and independent program for improving environmental performance of road freight transport in Europe. It is inspired by the SmartWay Partnership program in the United States. The European Shippers' Council and the Dutch shippers' organization EVO are providing the secretariat for Green Freight Europe.

The initiative was launched in March 2012 and aims to establish a European standard system for collecting, analyzing and monitoring CO2 emissions from road freight operations. The program drives reductions of carbon footprint by:

  • Establishing a platform for monitoring and reporting of carbon emissions, to assist in the procurement of transportation services and is based on existing standards
  • Promoting collaboration between carriers and shippers in driving improvement actions and monitoring progress
  • Establishing a certification system to reward shippers and carriers who fully participate in the program

Den Hartogh's spokesperson Jacco van Holten, member of the Board of Directors, said: "The Green Freight Europe program is something we can completely buy into: it offers us the tools, the credibility, and the network with like-minded companies we believe is important for delivering reductions of CO2 emissions in road freight operations. We intend to capitalise on the collaborative opportunities the program presents. By joining the platform Den Hartogh Logistics also commits to share its smart intelligence on sustainability, for all participants to benefit from. To achieve true sustainability requires shippers, providers and governments to fundamentally change the way of working. This can only be realized through strong collaboration between partners. Green Freight Europe can play a vital role in this process."
